Birgit Minichmayr receives Shakespeare Prize 2023
The Austrian actress Birgit Minichmayr was awarded the German Shakespeare Foundation’s prize in 2023. According to the jury, Minichmayr’s acting is complex and ambiguous, much like Shakespeare’s plays. She performs on stage with courage and a zest for life and is always very close to people, said Johan Simons, artistic director of Schauspielhaus Bochum, in his laudatory speech. Minichmayr has not only appeared in Shakespeare productions but has also produced an album featuring musical settings of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Her singing sounds effortless, and her musicality and depth are deeply moving, Simons continued. What particularly impresses her about Shakespeare is the simultaneous, universal, and timeless quality that makes his works still feel relevant even after nearly 450 years, Minichmayr said. The award ceremony took place as part of the Shakespeare Days in Weimar.
